Comedy Club

Friday 1st June We are delighted that Patrick Monahan is returning to Tabernacle Junction for a one man show on Friday 1st June. No sooner had Patrick come off TJ’s stage in November, we booked him to appear again.

Since then he has regularly cropped up on BBC 1, ITV 1 as well as a string of other television and radio appearances and we have to concede that this is likely to be the last time we will see him at TJ’s as his career is set to explode and he is already playing much larger venues.

Dan Mitchell will be compering the evening and as it was Patrick that beat him to win ITV 1′s  Show me the Funny, £100,000, a DVD deal and national tour, this should be quite entertaining in itself.

This then represents a great chance of catching him in an intimate audience with very reasonable ticket prices.  Spread the word, tell family, friends and colleagues and come and enjoy a fantastic night of first class comedy. £8

Friday 6th April Comedy Night with STEVE DAY, WES PACKER, TOM MONES, PETER PERKE + DAN MITCHELL. Our now legendary comedy night. Book early to guarantee a seat. Always very popular and only £8

COMPERE – DAN MITCHELL - Finalist and runner up on ITV’s SHOW ME THE FUNNY. As a performer, he is wild and unpredictable but always friendly. Dan is also the new In-House comedy club compere at Tabernacle Junction.

STEVE DAY – Steve is a truly unique comedian – warm, witty and engaging whilst dealing with the dilemmas of being a deaf man in a hearing world. His stories of multiple children, wearing a suit and the problems caused by not knowing how words are pronounced will have audiences in raptures, and his uplifting tales of overcoming the obstacles in his path will leave crowds feeling inspired.

Steve is a favourite at many venues across the UK and abroad, and is quickly establishing himself as one of the most popular and respected acts on the circuit.

WES PACKER  – Having risen from his first open spot in August 2005 to win ‘So You Think You’re Funny?’ at the Edinburgh Fringe in August 2006, Wes has forged a reputation as an exciting and fearless performer. TOM MONES – A comical parody of a Welsh Superstar, he moans on to his audience about his ailments, old age, life in “Past Caring” an old peoples home he resides in with fellow ageing stars and has-beens, such as Mike Shagger, Eltons Gone, Shirley Brassey, Eric Clappedout and Dolly Partgone!

Opening Night Review.

September 2011 Comedy Night at TJ’s A Success by Amanda James

Compere Kai Baron, affectionately known as Comedy Kai, introduced a trio of seasoned and diverse acts kicking off with James Cook, whose wit closely matched that of his sharp suit.

Looking remarkably comfortable on stage in the opening slot, his delivery was well executed and his occasional close to the bone, though not unwelcome, humour covered his family background, office life and charity drives and concluded with droll intimate details of the emotional and physical relationship with his wife; a risky strategy that has been the ruin of many a comic but fortunately one that successfully held up for James.

With an audience warmed by Kai and Brian Damage and his foil Krysstal upped the laughs with sexual innuendo and bawdy song, their relationship forming the basis of a comedy that the audience could not fail to recognise.  Brian convincing in his self belief that he is a “manof the world” is palpably frustrated with the scatty but harmless Krysstal who played her role of naïve submissive astutely.   Further showcasing of their talents saw Brian on the guitar and Krysstal on the tambourine, mouth organ, castanets and horn all at the same time.  With both the audience and performers genuinely enjoying themselves, it would not have been amiss to have had another half an hour of entertainment from the pair who also treated everyone to a few minutes individual performance demonstrating their versatility as comic artistes.

Topping the bill and with a tricky job ahead of him, Ian Stone of Mock The Week, 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Radio Five Live fame stepped out in jeans, checked shirt and with ease of manner.  On stage for almost an hour, the audience were treated to intelligent and perceptive comedy littered with personal anecdotes and opinion and it is easy to understand why Ian Stone is on the verge of a nationwide tour playing much bigger venues. Incisive, cynical and Sahara dry, his wit embraced family and sport, touched on natural disasters, theology, sexism and racism without being sexist or racist and was much fresher than many a well known comedian currently in favour with the powers that be in TV.  Clamorous applause and cheering demanded Ian back on stage for an encore, which he duly acceded to, and the management at Tabernacle Junction are hopeful of his return in a few months time.

The response to the September comedy night at Tabernacle Junction has been overwhelming with positive comments from exiting members of the audience in agreement that the evening was ‘absolutely brilliant’, ‘a godsend’, ‘about time’ and ‘a quality alternative to bowling and the cinema’.  The next TJ’s Comedy Special takes place on Saturday October 8th with further details to be released shortly though a little bird tells us a ‘Show Me The Funny’ finalist could be opening.
